A MAN was slashed with a machete during an attempted robbery.

The attack happened at around 4.20am on Tuesday (January 11) in the 'Clay Path' alleyway, which runs through Lloyd Park between Winns Avenue and Bedford Road, Walthamstow.

The victim, aged 38, suffered an injury to one of his legs and required surgery.

Officers are linking the attack to an attempted break-in to a home in nearby Brettenham Road, Walthamstow, minutes later.

The suspects are believed to have walked to the property from Clay Path.

Police say they later arrested three men in Chingford Road at 4.50am in connection with the incidents.

They are being interviewed, but have not been charged.

Waltham Forest Council controversially obtained an order to close the alleyway off to the public at night in September 2010 to combat anti-social behaviour.

However, the council is yet to enforce the order.

The authority confirmed the gate was not locked. A spokesman said: "It's because the gating of the path is due to take place as part of the £4 million refurbishment of Lloyd Park."

Meanwhile, a police spokeswoman said enquiries into what happened continue and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The robbery suspects are described as black and aged between 18 and 21 years old.

One was about 5'9 tall, with short black cropped hair and wearing a dark grey hooded top and blue jeans.

The second man is described as 5'11 tall with short black hair. He was wearing a grey hooded zip top with blue jeans, and possibly had a red bandana on.

The third suspect is 6'02, who has short black hair, a black coat and blue jeans.
