VANDALS caused hundreds of pounds of damage when they ransacked an allotment storage area.
Five youths broke into the building, at the allotment site in Osier Way, Leyton, at around 11.30pm on Sunday (January 9), and trashed containers of paint, fertiliser, bulbs, compost and other equipment.
A tin containing around £15 in loose change used to buy food for stray cats was also taken.
It is believed that the gang mistakingly thought there was valuable machinery inside, and vandalised the hut in frustration when they realised there was nothing worth stealing.
Alf Martin, of the Leyton Allotment Society, said allotment members were outraged.
He said: “Although there is nothing of real value on the allotments, the havoc these vandals caused is extremely worrying as they did untold damage to the inside of the premises and stole donated money to feed the allotment cats.
“It was just mindless vandalism."
The group was caught on CCTV and police are currently working to establish the identities of those involved. Mr Martin added that the items in the shed were sold to allotment holders and the money then re-invested in the site.
He said: “It will be difficult to replace what we've lost and it's going to need quite a clear-up.
“They threw liquid fertiliser and paint over the walls, so presumably they probably have red paint or brown stains on their shoes and clothing.
“Anyone who has further information or has noticed red paint on hands or clothing of someone they know should contact Leyton police.”
It is thought the gang broke into the building by smashing open a locked door. It has since had new security measures fitted.
A police spokeswoman said witnesses and those with information should contact officers on 0300 123 1212, or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
