DESPITE soaring graduate unemployment, a woman has landed a prime job in one of the sectors hit hardest by the economic downturn.

Asha Balendran, 22, of Grove Road, Walthamstow, achieved a first class honours degree last year in business computing systems and has secured a role as a technical support associate for Google Analytics.

City University's four-year sandwich course structure allowed her to gain experience in the workplace during a 12-month placement.

She said: “The year I spent at the Telefonica UK HQ was invaluable as it allowed me to gain exposure to one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the world.

“It reinforced my passion for technology and confirmed that I wanted a career at the centre of a fast-paced, innovative company.”

According to figures from the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (HECSC), graduate unemployment rose by 1% in 2009 to 8.9 per cent, the worst level for 17 years.

This means 21,020 students who graduated, about one in 10 of the total number, were still unemployed six months later.

The hardest hit sector was IT with unemployment increasing from 13.7% to 16.3%.

Google was also rated as the best employer in the world last year, according to Fortune magazine.
