CAMPAIGNERS will put their case to councillors outside a Town Hall meeting this week, in their ongoing fight against proposed council cuts.

The Waltham Forest Anti-cuts Union will protest from 6pm on Wednesday (January 19) before a cabinet meeting.

They are angry over the threat to 600 public sector jobs in the borough and say the Labour-led authority should do more to challenge an unprecedented cut in government funding.

Campaign coordinator Nancy Taaffe said they are particularly concerned about the proposed cuts taking place in Children & Young People Services, with the possible loss of 94 jobs.

This includes the loss of two social work assistants within the Adolescent Support Team, which helps children to stay out of care.

The plan could also see the Youth Offending Team, which works to prevent children becoming involved in crime, cut from 24 staff to 12.

Ms Taaffe added: “Councils don’t have to make these cuts.

“If they really represent the people who elected them, they should set a budget based upon the needs of their borough and campaign for the required funding from central government.

"We are making an appeal for the council not to accept the cuts agenda from the Government."

A 90-day staff consultation on the latest wave of cuts is due to end on February 28.

Staff losing their jobs will be informed in mid-April.

The union is also planning a protest march from Abbots Park, Leyton, to Walthamstow Town Square on Saturday 19 February at 12pm.
