A POLICE mechanic who miraculously survived crashing into a stationary lorry has been released from hospital.
All six lanes of the A406 were closed to traffic after the 62-year-old left the road while driving the marked police car under the Waterworks roundabout in Wanstead.
He had been carrying out maintenance work on the car and was driving it back to the patrol base in Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow, when he collided with the lorry from Belgium company Widem Wimatrans, which was parked in a lay-by.
Fire-fighters were sent to the scene from Woodford and Ilford, and three crews were dispatched by the London Ambulance Service.
Despite the damage to the car, the man was not trapped and was treated at the scene by paramedics for a broken arm and a minor head injury, before being taken to an east London hospital.
The man, from Rainham in Essex, underwent an operation on his arm before being released from hospital.
Police have confirmed no arrests have been made in relation to the crash.
The crash was not the first at the site. Transport For London, who own the road, said there have been 19 collisions on the same road over the past three years.
