THE MONTE Carlo rally is heading to town.

Nearly 50 classic cars are setting off from Glasgow on their way to their destination in the south of France on Thursday January 27 and are to call in at Waltham Abbey in the early hours of January 28 for a quick break before heading to Dover to continue the race.

Neil and Gaye Sjoberg, who are entering the rally with their Triumph Vitesse Mark 1 1967, live in the area and were delighted to be able to initiate the stopover in their own back yard.

Waltham Abbey Town Mayor Ricki Gadsby, who will be there to welcome the racers, said: β€œIt is such a wonderful opportunity to showcase what the town has to offer, and we have been amazed at the support we have received from not only local businesses, but also the townspeople too.”

The rally was created in 1911 by Prince Albert I of Monaco. It is one of the most famous endurance events in the world. Cars make for Monte Carlo from designated European start points, they then undergo tests in the mountains above Monaco before a winner is crowned.
