A BOARDED up shop is finally due to be demolished after planning permission was granted for the redevelopment of the site.
The art shop and picture gallery, which was run by Phil J. Simmonds and Sons on High Road, Woodford Green, has been shut for several years.
Redbridge Council planning committee gave permission for it to be torn down on March 23.
The shop is part of a conservation area featuring Victorian buildings and there were council concerns that the look of the road would be spoiled if it was demolished.
Planning committee member, Cllr Richard Hoskins, said: “It’s sad to see older buildings go on such a pleasant road, but we reluctantly agreed to the demolition.
“It was in such a bad condition and so we came to the decision it was better for it to go.”
Phase Brickworks Ltd applied to the Regional Planning Committee West to demolish the shop but no application has been submitted for a replacement building.
However, Cllr Hoskins said it could range from flats and restaurants to new stores.
“Whatever the application is, we will be more stringent and will make sure the development fits in with the rest of the area,” he added.
