DEBT collectors have been hired by the council to chase 65,545 separate debts in the last three years, it has emerged.

The figure means the authority is the 18th most frequent user of bailiffs, out of 318 local authorities in the UK.

The data, collected by civil liberties group Big Brother Watch, shows the council hired firms to collect council tax debt 30,739 times.

Parking fines led to bailiffs being hired in 33,806 separate cases between 2007 and 2010.

This ranked the authority as the 13th most frequent user for this purpose in the country.
