Champions League, quarter-final first leg
TEN-MAN Tottenham's Champions League hopes were torn up at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid ran riot to amass an almost unassailable first-leg lead.
The turning point of the game was the sending off for Spurs' Peter Crouch after just 14 minutes, before the Galacticos blasted three second-half goals to take the tie by the scruff of the neck.
Madrid had taken a fourth-minute lead through Emmanuel Adebayor's header that crept over the line. But Tottenham weathered the initial storm and were gaining a foothold in the game when Crouch was given a second yellow card for a tackle on left-back Marcelo, having previously been booked for a challenge on Sergio Ramos.
The visitors defended in numbers for the rest of the half and Heurelho Gomes was rarely called into action.
But after the break the floodgates opened. Adebayor was allowed to pick his spot on 57 minutes to head home a cross stood up by Marcelo.
Angel di Maria thundered in a stunning third when he cut in from the right and found the top corner with a fierce left-footed drive.
And any hope that more damage could be prevented to give Harry Redknapp's men a sniff at White Hart Lane next Wednesday was dashed when Ronaldo rifled a volley past a suspect Gomes at the back post.
