A TOTAL of 38 people from Essex, including eight from Waltham Abbey, were arrested by the end of yesterday (Wednesday) in the largest series of police raids across the county so far this year.

The operation, codenamed Zinc II, was co-ordinated by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, and targeted those suspected of committing crimes ranging from burglary and metal theft to handling stolen goods and drug supply.

Police chiefs were so pleased with the success of the operation that they have posted footage taken at some of the raids on YouTube.

The ages of the men arrested in Waltham Abbey range from 18 to 59. All were held on suspicion of either supply or possession of controlled drugs apart from the 18-year-old, who was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Assistant Chief Constable Gareth Wilson, who leads the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "I’d like to thank colleagues on both sides of the water who have done a sterling job on what has been a complex operation.

"The results speak for themselves. Today’s activity will undoubtedly make our communities safer, and more enjoyable places to be.

"Anyone who thinks it is acceptable to make life miserable for others by behaving illegally should expect to be brought to justice.”
