POLICE are warning residents in Chingford and south east Epping Forest to stay indoors after a warehouse containing industrial chemicals caught fire.

The blaze broke out at 7.30am on an industrial estate next to the King George's Reservoir in Jeffreys Road, Enfield.

Police say there is nothing to suggest that the smoke from the fire contains chemicals, but are advising residents to stay inside as a precaution.

The London Fire Brigade says the blaze was brought under control at 10.15am, but they remain on the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Met Police are appealing to residents in the areas to the east of Kings Georges Reservoir, Enfield, to remain indoors with windows and doors shut following a fire at an industrial premises.

"A plume of smoke is travelling east from the site of the fire, and while there is nothing to suggest the fumes from the chemicals have become contained in the smoke, as a precaution police are asking residents to stay indoors."

Fire crews have also evacuated a large part of the surrounding area.

Around 120 people living nearby have been moved to a rest centre.

Eyewitnesses said fire-fighters advised them to leave the scene because of the risk of an explosion.
