SCHOOL children are still in danger from parents parking recklessly despite a campaign by staff to tackle the hazard.
Those picking up and dropping off children outside Churchfields School, in South Woodford, are flouting the law by parking in the middle of the road or on zig-zag lines.
Teachers have campaigned outside and leafleted parents to raise awareness, but it has had little effect.
“People are parking wherever they want to park regardless of what we do,” said Year 3 teacher Sarah Lowden, 26, who organised the campaign.
“When parents are in a rush they park wherever they can and don’t realise that they are putting kids’ lives in danger.”
The problem has been exacerbated by the fact that Redbridge Council does not have the money to pay for another lollipop man after popular Ted Feathers died earlier this year.
The school had a number of suggestions from concerned parents, like CCTV cameras and naming and shaming, but they were deemed too expensive or were refused for other reasons.
“The problem is very real and it is difficult to see it going away soon,” said Cllr Richard Hoskins, of Church End ward, who supports the campaign.
“There are around 1,000 pupils at the Infants and Junior schools combined, and a huge number of them are at risk every single day of the school week.”
