A FIRE-FIGHTER is hoping to raise more than £1,000 for a children's deaf charity when he runs the London Marathon this weekend.

Carl Gibbons, 40, who works at Leyton Fire Station, has a five-year-old son who is partially deaf and is keen to raise as much as possible for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

It will be the third time he has pounded the streets of the 26-mile route.

Mr Gibbons, who lives in Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, said: “unless modern science drastically improves he [my son] will never be able to achieve some of the things I’ve managed to do, including becoming a fire-fighter.

"I can’t think of a more deserving cause than the NDCS and am hoping to raise both money and awareness for them with my Marathon run.”

All fire-fighters from London running the marathon will also be wearing vests highlighting the importance of smoke alarms.

He added: “If this vital fire safety information helps to save the life of one person, all the hard work is more than worth it.”
