DRIVERS wrongly fined for making u-turns in a busy street will be repaid in full, the council has confirmed.

Confusion over where motorists were permitted to make the manoeuvre in Clayhall Avenue, Clayhall, led to dozens of fines being issued after a new CCTV camera was installed.

Despite a sign warning motorists not to perform u-turns, another notice marking the end of the restriction in another part of the road had been knocked down and not replaced.

Cllr Gwyneth Deakins, of Roding Ward, was inundated with complaints from angry residents after receiving £60 fines.

But the authority has now confirmed the penalties were issued in error and would be refunded.

Cllr Deakins said: “I’m delighted that it’s over, we have clearly won the argument.”

A spokesman said: “I appreciate the Council’s actions may be viewed as wrong.

“It is the case though that drivers should not be performing u turns at this location if they properly abide by the signage.

“It would assist the back office process if drivers write to us requesting a refund.”
