Chelsea FC legends and a TV star were among the players competing in a tribute match for a disabled former footballer.
Ex-England internationals Dave Beasant and Kerry Dixon were among the Chelsea Ex Pro Legends Team who lined up against the Debden Sports Legends, included The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright, in a charity match for former Debden player Wayne Sammut, who has motor neurone disease.
Wayne managed the Debden side in a fiercely contested 5-2 victory for Chelsea.
More than 500 people attended the match at Debden Sports Club where there was a food stalls, a bar and a raffle.
£8,000 was raised for Wayne and his wife, Kay, 47 and 12-year-old daughter Maddie.
Wayne, 49, said: “It went better than I expected. The weather worked out perfectly.
“Friends came from all over the world, from Tenerife to Australia, there was one guy there who I had not seen since junior school.
“My daughter, Maddie, also got to meet Mark Wright, which she was very excited about.”
Liz Hicks, of Cup Promotions, said: “There was an amazing amount of support for Wayne. Everyone was there to get behind him. It just shows how much respect there is in the local community for him.
“It was great to see Mark there. He knows Wayne and has played for Debden before but it was great to have his support.”
