A CEREMONY has marked one of the most times in the Sikh calendar.

The raising of the holy Nashan Sahib flag on Saturday (April 16) was followed by a procession outside Walthamstow Town Hall in Forest Road, Walthamstow, to commemorate the Sikh New Year.

The following day Leyton and Wanstead MP, John Cryer, joined in the Vaisakhi celebrations at the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Temple in Francis Road, Leyton.

Vaisakhi, also spelled Baisakhi, is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar.

The festival commemorates the founding of the Sikh community, known as the Khalsa, by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

To mark the celebrations, Sikh devotees also attend the Gurudwara before dawn with flowers and offerings.
