DETERMINED residents and police have submitted statements against an off licence’s proposals to extend its opening hours.

South Woodford locals and Redbridge Police’s comments have slammed Woody Food and Wine’s application to stay open longer as a danger to the local community.

Woody off licence owner Cengiz Karatas applied to sell alcohol on Fridays and Saturdays until 2.30am and Sundays to Thursdays until 1am.

The Manor Court Lodge residents’ statements show how personally affected the locals claim to be.

Fredric Shaw wrote: “I have told my children not to visit me with my grandchildren in case they witness any violent incidents,” and Beryl Gayer wrote: “I am very nervous to go out by myself as I do not feel safe anymore.”

Other residents highlighted an increase in crime and disorder, public nuisance and even harm to children as reasons to deny the application.

Patricia Wickers wrote: “Children could be influenced to drink alcohol, they would think it is cool,” while neighbour Dorothy Park claimed more violence would occur as a result.

Redbridge Police’s licensing officer, David Walker, raised concerns that increased opening hours will encourage young clubbers at nearby Funky Mojoes night club to drink in the street, fuelling crime and anti-social behaviour.

However, owner Mr Karatas said his store was being unfairly targeted.

He said: “If the council can give Funky Mojoes and Kebabland license extensions then why not me? It would be unfair and inconsistent.”

He added: “It’s mad. It doesn’t make sense that children are in danger. We’re only an off licence, we don’t sell guns or any sharp things.”
