LONDON was relatively calm last night, with police maintaining an increased presence on the streets.

There were no significant incidents of disorder reported in either Redbridge or Waltham Forest, while Essex Police also maintained order across the Epping Forest district.

The Metropolitan Police has now arrested a total of 888 people in connection with violence, disorder and looting, with 371 people charged.

But despite the lack of any major disorder in the capital, police were still kept busy.

In Enfield a man wearing knuckle dusters was arrested outside Enfield Police Station.

Earlier in the day three men were arrested in connection with violent disorder and the arson at the Sony Distribution Centre, Solar Way, Enfield, on Monday (August 8).

Elsewhere in the capital, two 17-year-olds were arrested in connection with looting in the Sloane Square and Pimlico areas.

In Croydon a further two people were arrested in connection with the fire which destroyed a furniture store.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh of the Met, said: "In the early hours of this morning we started knocking on doors to arrest people.

"We have got more than 100 warrants which we will be working our way through over the coming hours and days.

"With so many officers on duty we want to use their time by going out there and arresting burglars, robbers and thieves - those people who cause concern and crime in our communities.

"Some of those warrants are also directly linked to Operation Withern's ongoing investigation."
