CHINGFORD Police Station will be relocated to nearby Station Road, it is claimed.

Chingford MP Iain Duncan Smith said he was assured by borough commander Steve Wisbey that, despite the loss of the existing station in Kings Head Hill, a 24-hour police base would remain in the area.

He also revealed that Station Road was the likely location of the new facility.

All police property is currently under review after the Met was ordered to cut costs by £260 million over the next four years.

Chief Supt Wisbey has previously said Chingford Police Station, which was used as the borough headquarters, is likely to close as only 30 per cent of the building is currently in use.

This follows the opening of bases in Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow, and Hainault Road, Leytonstone.

Mr Duncan Smith said: “(Chief Supt Wisbey) has guaranteed me a 24-hour presence in Station Road.

“We must retain a police station in Chingford and Station Road may actually be a better place because it is a busier road and tends to have more trouble.”

Further details of the new proposed station have not been revealed.

Five Safer Neighbourhood sergeants in Waltham Forest will be cut as part of the cost-cutting measures.

Final recommendations will be presented to the Metropolitan Police authority (MPA) in the coming months.

A more detailed public consultation will then take place each London borough by the end of the year.
