THE man who was killed in a police shooting which sparked the riots across England was on his way to Chingford at the time of his death, it has emerged.

Father-of-four Mark Duggan, 29, was travelling to the north of Waltham Forest last Thursday (August 4) when his minicab was stopped by police close to Tottenham Hale underground station.

He was shot twice by a Met firearms officer at 6.15pm and pronounced dead at the scene 25 minutes later.

Although Mr Duggan was carrying a gun, investigators say there is no evidence he fired at officers.

Now the Chingford Guardian's sister paper The Haringey Independent has learnt that Mr Duggan had told the minicab driver to take him to a location in Chingford just before he was shot.

Mr Duggan, who lived in Roland Hill Avenue, Tottenham, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A protest over the alleged lack of information about his death turned violent in Tottenham on Saturday (August 6) after an alleged confrontation between a teenage girl and police.

Three further days of rioting followed, including in Waltham Forest where more than 50 businesses were smashed and small fires started.

Vandalism was widespread in Chingford, with shops on both Chingford Mount Road and Station Road being targeted.

A police Safer Neighbourhood Team office on the Chingford Hall Estate was also attacked.

Mr Duggan was shot dead in Ferry Lane, where police have previously arrested other gun suspects. In December 2009 a 24-year-old man was in a taxi there when he was arrested by armed police and caught with a gun and bullet-proof vest.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is currently carrying out an investigation into Mr Duggan's death.

A police officer was also shot at the scene. It later emerged that the bullet, which lodged in his radio, had been fired from a police gun.

Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said "I want to appeal directly to anyone who saw or heard anything that may assist us with our investigation - or if you know anyone who has any information and has yet to come forward and speak to us, please urge them to do so."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about it is urged to contact the IPCC on 0800 096 9079 or via email ferrylaneshooting@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.
