THE COUNCIL is warning residents to beware of firms selling cheap burglar alarms.
The announcement comes after Trading Standards officers reported a rise in complaints from residents across Rebridge, who have been approached by people offering them cheap alarm systems.
Residents have reported being telephoned or approached by door-to-door sales people who claim they are selling products recommended by the police and the council.
The alarm systems are offered for a small amount of money, but those agreeing to buy them are often tied to long and expensive service contracts.
The council details of the minimum requirements of alarm systems and general advice can be found at http://www.securedbydesign.com/.
A list of Trading Standards approved contractors can be found at http://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk/sitepages/bwchome.aspx, or by calling 020 8554 5000.
Anyone approached about buying a cheap burglar alarm system is urged to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
