POLICE are monitoring the situation after rumours circulated of a possible attack on an Islamic centre.

Officers were sent to the Chingford Islamic Society building in Chingford Mount Road just after 8pm on Friday (August 12) after a number of calls from the public.

They found no evidence that an offence had been committed.

A police spokeswoman said: "During the last week lots of members of the public have contacted us to provide information that may be of assistance.

"On occasion this is rumour and gossip which they have heard within the community.

"There has been no attack or incidents against the Islamic Centre."

The police have also denied reports that arrests have been made in connection with the rumours.
