A YOUNG scout with cerebral palsy conquered a 1,500ft peak in the Lake District with a little help from his friends.
Charles Turrell, 15, of Gordon Road in Epping, is a member of the 4th Epping Scouts and Unit explorers - who spent their summer camp among the lakeside beauty spots.
After testing their skills at archery, sailing and gorge walking, the group turned their attentions towards a stiffer challenge.
Group leader Robin Defoe said: "Wansfell isn’t particularly high compared to some of the fells in the Lake District, standing at 482 metres, but we decided to set ourselves the challenge of taking Charles with us.
“When he was born the experts suggested that he would never walk. Indeed, he has to spend a lot of time in his wheelchair – which we took with us on to the fell.
“Not surprisingly, it took quite a long time, both because of the difficulty of manoeuvring the wheelchair over rough terrain, but also because Charles wanted to walk.”
As they approached the summit Charles had to abandon the wheelchair for the final steps while his friends encouraged him with a chorus of ‘He’ll be coming up the mountain when he comes’.
Mr Defoe said: “It was a very emotional time at the top and some of us even succumbed to tears of happiness.”
Charles collected more than £200 in sponsorship for the disability charity Bibic.
