A FORMER prizefighter and legend of Waltham Forest boxing has died.
Derek "The Punching Postman" Lloyd passed away in his sleep at Whipps Cross University Hospital on August 16 aged 75 after contracting pneumonia.
The former British Flyweight Champion joined Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club, formerly based at the Territorial Drill Hall in Chingford, with his twin brother Bernard in the 1940s.
Derek, known as 'Del', went on to represent the army and was crowned ABA flyweight champion in 1955 after beating Slough Centre’s K Langford at Wembley Arena.
After turning professional, the most notable bout of his 24-fight career in the paid ranks would end with a gallant sixth round defeat in a European Flyweight Title decider in Linguria Italy in 1961 against Salvatore Burruni.
Derek had stepped in as a very late reserve to face the champion.
Forest club secretary Ian Cuddy said: "Del was a true gentleman and a much respected figure in the boxing world.
"Everyone at the club is very saddened by this loss, as he really was Mr Waltham Forest Boxing Club.
"He has helped us through some very tough times over the years, notably helping us find our current home in Highams Park just over ten years ago when we were close to being homeless and closed down.
"And even up until four years ago Del was still training youngsters down at the club on a regular basis, as well as being a regular attender to our annual shows even as late as November last year.
"He was without doubt a very special and well liked man, and I can't even imagine to think of how many kids he has helped coach over the years."
Chingford welterweight and Prizefighter winner Michael Lomax, who knew Derek well from his amateur days, was full of praise for Derek's boxing ability.
He said: "To be an ABA and British champion, as well as box in a European title decider shows you what a quality boxer Del was.
"He then became a fantastic coach and gave so much back to the sport he loved, and I know what a huge loss his death means to everyone in boxing.”
Derek’s funeral will be held at the City of London Crematorium in Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park, on Friday September 2nd at 1.45pm.
A wake will then take place at the Kings Ford pub in Chingford Mount Road, where a write up and picture of Derek’s boxing achievements still adorns the walls.
Derek’s family have asked well wishers not to bring or send flowers to the funeral and have asked instead for donations to be made to Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club.
There will be a collection box at the wake, or cheques can be sent care of Martin Long to E4 Health and Fitness Centre, Hickman Avenue, Highams Park E4 9JG.
