SCHOOLS recorded their highest ever GCSE results in the borough today.

Pupil A* to C grade pass rates rose significantly in a number of schools today as children received their exam results.

Highams Park School, in Handsworth Avenue, Highams Park, saw its A* to C pass rate hit an all-time high of 81 per cent, 10 per cent greater than last year’s previous best and higher than this year’s national average of 69.8 per cent.

Walthamstow Academy, in Billet Road, Walthamstow; Holy Family Technology College, in Shernall Street, Walthamstow; and Lammas School and Sports College, in Seymour Road, Leyton, all reported rises in the number of pupils who achieved five or more A* to C grades.

Lammas School head-teacher Shona Ramsay said: “We are thrilled that our top performing students continue to achieve some of the best results in the country, but equally as important is the phenomenal progress that many of our students make as new arrivals to the country.”

Holy Family Technology College saw 71 per cent of its students achieve five A* to C grades including English and Maths, while Walthamstow Academy had 53 per cent of pupils score five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths.

One quarter of exams sat at the academy achieved an A* or an A, a rise on its 21 per cent figure last year.

Principal Emma Skae said: “The students collecting their results today were the Academy’s first Year 7 students and they illustrate the positive impact that academy status is making on the standard of education we offer.

“The students have worked incredibly hard all year and I congratulate them all on their achievements.”
