A MAN who crashed through a beautician’s window while violently resisting police attempts to search him, has been fined £500 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,200.
But Emeka Ogbonna of Wolsey Gardens in Ilford, did not receive any further punishment because he is awaiting sentencing for a burglary committed during the recent outbreak of disorder in the capital.
Passers-by looked on in horror as a struggle developed after police tried to search Ogbonna in January this year, under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
The 25-year-old was spotted behaving suspiciously in George Lane, South Woodford, but when Sergeant Christopher Chandler attempted to search him, Ogbonna resisted.
As the men grappled, they broke and fell through the window of the Allure Nails salon.
Pamela Mann, who owns the beautician’s, said at the time: “You just do not expect these things to happen.
“The police definitely could have handled the situation better.”
But speaking after Ogbonna was sentenced, Sgt Chandler said: "In over 20 years I have seldom encountered such violent resistance to a simple drug search.
“I am sorry for the alarm caused to the public, but the people of Woodford have a right to expect us to respond to their concerns about drugs, and the Court has clearly shown their support for this."
At Snaresbrook Crown Court on August 17, Ogbonna pleaded guilty to intentionally obstructing an officer.
In sentencing him, the Judge said any community punishment she might consider was likely to be made irrelevant by the fact that he was awaiting sentencing for a more serious matter.
On August 9, he was found guilty of burglary during the violent disorder which took place earlier this month.
He is awaiting sentencing for that offence at Wood Green Crown Court.
