HEALTH bosses are urging new parents in Waltham Forest to take their babies for a health check after six weeks, amid concerns some are ignoring the appointment.

Dr Kay Eilbert, NHS Waltham Forest's deputy director of public health, said the GP check-ups were vital to both examine a newborn's health and development and to reassure parents.

She said: "one of the most important dates for your new baby’s calendar is the six-week check at your GP.”

She added: “It is really important that parents take the time to attend this appointment. It is the one early opportunity to ensure that the baby is healthy and to reassure new parents.

“The vast majority of babies examined are provided with a clean bill of health and their parents leave the appointment feeling reassured and pleased that their baby is doing well.”

Parents of young babies should receive their six-week health check appointment automatically from their GP practice.
