A DEAL has today been signed to create a 320-pitch campsite at the Waterworks Nature Reserve and Golf Centre in Leyton during the 2012 Olympic Games.

The announcement from The Camping and Caravanning Club comes after the Waltham Forest Guardian revealed at the weekend that The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority was in negotiations over the plans.

It has emerged that the site, off Lammas Road, will be used for camping from Friday July 20 next year until Thursday August 16, and will feature "full" camping facilities and onsite catering.

It follows the Caravan Club's decision to pull out of plans to create a 1,300-pitch campsite at the childhood home of hurdler Sally Gunnell in Chigwell following strong local opposition.

Pitches will cost upwards of £45 per night, based on a minimum three-night stay.

The regional park authority has declined to answer whether the organisation is getting any compensation in return for use of the land.

Alan Butler, Parklands and Venues Assistant Director at the authority, said: “We are pleased to work in partnership with The Camping and Caravanning Club in offering accommodation within close proximity to the Olympic Park.

“We share the Club’s commitment to high standards and environmental credentials and believe that by working together, we can provide visitors with affordable accommodation."

Camping and Caravanning Club membership services director Paul Jones added: “To have secured an event site so close to the Olympic Park is a major coup for the club and only helps strengthen our campsite portfolio during the summer of 2012.

“We are continuing to work with a number of partners to help ensure the success of these temporary campsites.”

Places can be booked by calling 024 7647 5426 or 0845 130 7633.
