TWELVE ‘oxen’ are gearing up for a new event to mark a turning point in a town’s history.
The event will recreate the arrival of the historic Holy Cross in Waltham Abbey more than 1,000 years ago and will include a parade of 66 people playing Saxons and 12 Scouts, who will play the part of the oxen carrying the cross.
The legend of the Holy Cross, which king Harold was said to have prayed beneath before the battle of Hastings, brought many pilgrims to the town and helped establish the abbey there.
There will be a service in the Abbey Church at 2pm to mark the occasion, followed by the walk, which will start at 6.30pm on the western side of the River Lee and end at the abbey.
Organisers are still looking for more Saxons for the event and anyone interested should call 01992 892408 and leave a message on the answerphone set up for the event.
