TWO soldiers who lost limbs in Afghanistan came to Woodford Green to help raise funds for amputees.
Ben Parkinson, 27, and Jack Otta, 23, were the guests of honour at the Uplands Social Club in Green Walk, Woodford Green on Saturday (May 5).
The two men watched an exhibition of boxing by the Islington Boxing Club, during the course of a day which attracted around 300 people who enjoyed a barbecue, face painting and raffles.
Rab Picken, one of the organisers, said: “We raised around £5,000 on the day and the money is still coming in.
“I’m staggered to be honest. It’s a wonderful effort by everyone.”
The money will go to The Pilgrim Bandits, a charity which supports amputees, veterans and other forces projects.
Mr Picken said: “Everyone knows about Help for Heroes, but these boys also do a lot of good work and deserve our support.
“It was very emotional meeting them, but you try to keep yourself in check when you speak to them because they don’t want any sympathy.”
