RESIDENTS are furious that they have been given just three days notice of a week-long ban on parking in their street due to an Olympics concert.

Families living in Brisbane Road, Leyton, say the council has decided to ban all vehicles from the street between Sunday May 13 and Sunday May 20.

The council is holding its 'Party on the Pitch' concert to celebrate the Olympics at Leyton Orient FC's ground there on Saturday May 19, and says it needs time to prepare the area.

But the street does not have permit parking, unlike most of the surrounding roads, and residents fear they will not be able to park anywhere near their homes as a result.

Cheryl Moran, 35, said she was appalled at the lack of notice.

She said: "Living next to a football ground we accept there's going to be disruption and we always make arrangements on matchdays.

"Leyton Orient are usually very good and give us at least two weeks notice if there's going to be any events.

"But the council only just came along and posted leaflets through our doors yesterday (Thursday May 10).

"They've been planning this concert for a year and it's appalling they only decided to inform us of this now."

Thousands of people are expected to attend the concert, which runs between 4pm and 9.30pm and will be headlined by former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

The event, part of the council's 'Big 6', is free for ticket-holders. But the bill is being paid out of revenue the authority hopes to make from renting out land for campsite during the Olympics.

Ms Moran added: "I can't believe they think this is an acceptable thing to do.

"If I had been on holiday for a week I could've come home and found my car had been towed. Why have they left it to the last minute?"

The Guardian is awaiting a comment from the council.
