THE only cinema in Waltham Forest has won the borough’s first small business competition.

Screen 17 Cinema picked up £2,500 worth of prizes after coming first out of dozens of entrants into the Waltham Forest Small Business Competition.

The venture, started just last summer, polled 234 votes out of 640 to win the competition.

Screen 17 plays films three times a month in Orford Road, Walthamstow, as well as running children’s and adults’ film clubs.

It also provides organic popcorn, hotdogs and fairtrade tea and coffee for movie snacks.

Co-founder Nick Bertram said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and would like to thank all those who voted for us.

“We feel this confirms that we are providing people with something they want and need in the local area.”

Mr Bertram and co-founder Ian Simpson have won a selection of business books from Waterstones, £100 worth of free stationery from Ryman stationers and three months of free business support from Waltham Forest Women in Business.
