THE company behind a failed bid for a "festival-style" campsite during the Olympics is to reapply for a licence.

Big Events Camping Ltd (BEC) wanted to have live entertainment and sell alcohol for up to 6,000 people at Low Hall Sports Ground in Walthamstow for three weeks, but its application was rejected by Waltham Forest Council.

It launched an appeal which was today held at Thames Magistrates court.

A resident who attend the hearing, which lasted a matter of minutes, told the Guardian it concluded with the firm being ordered to resubmit its bid to the council.

A new hearing is now expected to be held by a licensing committee at Waltham Forest Town Hall at a date yet to be announced sometime in the next few months.

It is thought that BEC plans to alter part of its plans, which have been criticised by residents who are fearful about noise, disruption and crime.

The firm can still hold a campsite without a licence but its capacity will be limited and no booze sales or entertainment can happen.

Last month the firm denied "false advertising" after its website continued to promote festival events with drinking, despite not having a licence.

But since then it has changed parts of its website, removing some references to festival events.

However it is still advertising that alcohol will be for sale.

No-one from BEC was available for immediate comment this afternoon.

Last year the council secretly signed a contract to lease the land to BEC, hoping that a share of the profits from the deal would help pay the estimated £1.5million bill for its 'Big 6' series of events to celebrate the Olympics.
