SECURITY measures at Walthamstow Stadium will be reviewed after a guard was attacked and left in a critical condition.

Site owner London & Quadrant (L&Q) has said it will seek advice from police after the guard was found unconscious by a colleague on Monday.

Police were called to reports of a fight at 9.40am and 40-year-old was found unconscious.

Neighbours of the site said there have been constant problems with thieves at the site since it closed in 2008.

Walthamstow Stadium Area Residents/Community Association chairwoman, Gail Penfold, said: "There's been thieves going into the stadium for years.

"We've had problems with them before, stealing lead and other materials, but this is different.

"It's absolutely unacceptable for someone to be attacked, it's horrible.

Current security measures on the site include two guards patrolling 24 hours a day with a dog.

An L&Q spokesman said: "We were very concerned to hear about this incident involving a security guard at Walthamstow Stadium and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

"The police are now investing the matter and we will provide them with any assistance they need from us. "We will also be seeking advice from the police and reviewing security at the site following this incident."

The housing association is preparing to build a 294-home development on the site after its controversial application was passed last week.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who has final say over the application, is expected to make his decision within a fortnight.
