A PUPIL is one step away from being crowned national Top Trumps champion after beating more than 100,000 other children to make it to a competition final.
Austin Davies, 10, is a year five pupil at Theydon Bois Primary School and on Saturday (May 19) he will meet 12 other finalists to battle it out in the last round of the National School Top Trumps Competition.
Austin won the first round against fellow Theydon Primary pupils before taking on thousands of other competitors from schools throughout the country in the second round, receiving the overall second best score to earn his place in the final.
Austin said: “I am very excited to be going to the final, I never expected to make it.
“It has been a lot of work and I have practised a lot and my mates have supported me.
“I do not know why I am so good at it, I can just look at my cards and see which number is the best to go for.”
Austin’s teacher, Kim Williams, said: “We are all very proud of Austin, he had worked really hard and been very dedicated.
“The game is great for school children as it is good memory training and increases problem solving skills.”
For the competition, players have been using recently released London 2012 cards, and compare athlete skill ratings to decide the winner.
At the final in Stratford, east London, Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave will crown the winner and afterwards take them rowing on the river Thames.
