A PLANNED Olympics campsite in the grounds of a college has been cancelled - while a second is under threat due to funding problems.
The London Camping Company (LCC) had wanted to run camps at Sir George Monoux College in Walthamstow and Ive Farm playing fields in Leyton during the Games.
The Guardian revealed the plans in February when the company began advertising the sites online, although the council has never publicly commented on the issue.
But today it emerged that talks have broken down with the college - and that the Ive Farm proposals could also be called off.
The college said in a statement that "no agreement could be reached that was suitable for all concerned parties."
LCC head Noel Doyle told the Guardian he was disappointed but insisted that a deal over council-owned Ive Farm had already been signed.
But he added: "It might not happen if we do not get sponsorship.
"We were planning on charging about £40 a night but other campsites in London are charging £10. We can't compete at them prices.
"We would never make the amount of money required by the council, so we've got to look at alternatives."
Mr Doyle said he was in negotiations with two possible corporate sponsors and was hoping of finding out if they could help fund the site in the next few weeks.
He said negotiations were still on-going with the council about the financial implications of the campsite not going ahead.
But ward councillor and Liberal Democrat opposition leader Cllr Bob Sullivan said council officers had told him no deal had been signed.
He said: "For the council to negotiate this without any consultation at all is appalling.
"It’s now only two months until the Olympics and the council still can’t give me a timetable for when a decision will be made."
Residents have criticised the council's "secrecy" over the issue and are fearful of noise and disruption if the campsite goes ahead.
Meanwhile a new licence hearing is set to be heard within weeks for alcohol sales and entertainment at the planned Low Hall Olympic campsite in Walthamstow run by the Big Events Company (BEC).
The council is hoping to pay part of the estimated £1.5million bill for its 'Big 6' series of events to celebrate the Olympics from renting out the land for camping.
