A TAXPAYER-FUNDED, broadband internet connection in councillors' homes is set to be cancelled in a bid to save £52,000.
Redbridge Council currently spends £35 a month per councillor for the service, but this is due to stop on October 31.
Instead it is proposed that councillors' allowance for technology will increase by £42 a year, from £10,138 to £10,180, to contribute to the cost of an internet connection.
Councillors' concerns over internet security meant the proposal was recently withdrawn, but it is expected to be voted on shortly.
Cllr Ian Bond, cabinet member for resources, said: "If we didn't make this cut in broadband provision, then we would have to make cuts to other services.
"As a council we have tried to lead by example and staff should also experience cuts."
