A PLAN to modernise a local synagogue is likely to be submitted to the council within the next few months.
Representatives of the Woodford Liberal Synagogue have been in discussions with architects over a £200,000 scheme to remodel parts of the building in Marlborough Road, South Woodford.
Rabbi Richard Jacobi, said the refurbishment would involve installing a new lift to improve access for disabled and elderly people, a glass foyer and a new space for worship.
He added: “We want to bring the design of the synagogue into the 21st century.
“We want a building where everyone feels included.
“At the moment some people feel cut off during services because of the layout of the synagogue.
“That is the antithesis of how things should be."
Rabbi Jacobi added that much of the funding for the plans would be donated by members of the congregation.
But he said he hoped some of the money could be provided by grants from other organisations.
