INDEPENDENT businesses must unite to preserve Wanstead’s distinct character, according to traders looking to recreate a strong sense of community on the high street.
Prompted by the challenges posed by the economic downturn, internet shopping and competition from large American-style shopping malls, a group of businesses have joined forces to relaunch the Wanstead Business Partnership.
Its aim is to provide a strong support network in difficult times in order to preserve the High Street’s village atmosphere, which is reinforced by independent small shops and restaurants.
Rachel Root, owner of gift and interiors shop The Orange Tree, was chosen as the new chairwoman at a meeting last Thursday.
She said she has a strong desire to help breathe new life into the local economy
“Bringing shoppers back to the high street is something I am really passionate about,” she said.
“I don’t think local people will let the high street go under and it’s just a case of reminding people that we are here.
Amerah Bashir, owner of Silver Lined Wedding Shows and Events, is the new deputy chairwoman and said there was an urgent need to act.
“If the Wanstead Business Partnership was not restarted then Westfield would have eventually started to have an impact on people’s livelihoods and it would be a shame to see the high street become full of betting shops and charity shops,” she added.
Treasurer Michele Redgrave, manager of Images in Frames, said: “I know from past experiences that partnerships help get people together and give people a sense of belonging.
“Westfield seems to have been a big blow to trade and we have really got to push our ideas to bring shoppers back to the high street.”
Sue Nolan, councillor for Snaresbrook, welcomed the rebirth of the partnership.
She said: “I believe Wanstead High Street is very unique and has something different to offer.
“It is a case of finding new ways of keeping people interested.
“Why get on the train to Westfield when you can get everything you need on the high street?”
Ideas to boost trade include 20 per cent goods at weekends, fashion shows and food festivals to highlight goods and services.
The group hopes to have monthly meetings to discuss how to bring back trade.
