PARKING restrictions could be introduced in Chingford with just 24 hours notice to deal with road congestion caused by Olympic visitors, it has emerged.

Controlled parking zones are being implemented in large parts of Leyton, Leytonstone, Woodford Green and South Woodford due to the expected demand for parking space.

Fears this could push hoards of drivers into Chingford, especially the area around the station, has led to a plan being devised to deal with problems in residential streets.

Cllr Michael Lewis said details of the plan had not been finalised, including which roads could be included.

But businesses fear the move could deter visitors to the area and undermine an opportunity to boost trade.

Co-owner of Scoff's Sandwich Bar in Station Road in Chingford, Ali Arslan, said: "To use these restrictions is unacceptable.

"I would hope the council wanted to help the businesses. It's absolutely dead here during the week so we would love the tourists to come and try our shops. There will be so many people it is bound to help us."

Andrea Canham, manager of The Front Room cafe, added: "It would be terrible if the council stopped them from coming here but where would (the restrictions) stop?

"It would have to include Loughton, Epping, and all the surrounding areas because we're all on top of each other here."

There are concerns that Olympic visitors will park in Chingford in order to catch a train to Liverpool Street, where they can catch the Tube to Olympic venues.

Roads around the railway station currently have a parking restriction between 10am and 11am to prevent commuters clogging up the roads.

Cllr Michael Lewis said: "If the amount of parking gets out of control then we will introduce something, "Obviously we want people to use the shops and restaurants in Station Road though. That's the balance we have to keep."

But Pauline Barrett, 40, of Garfield Road, said: "It's restaurants' one chance to make some extra money, it's their opportunity so they should be able to take it.

"It would be awkward for homeowners but it's only for two weeks."

The Guardian is awaiting comment from the council.
