AN AUSTRALIAN TV channel is to hold late-night broadcasts from a controversial temporary campsite during the Olympics.

'Camp in London' organisers have said that the country's Channel Ten will use its campground at Low Hall Sports Ground in Walthamstow during the Games.

Plans for a three-week campsite on the land were granted a licence in May despite widespread opposition from residents concerned about noise and crime.

Earlier proposals for "festival-style" events were rejected but organisers were later given permission for alcohol sales, dancing and recorded music between 1pm and 10pm seven days a week.

In a statement on its website, organisers said there would be live broadcasts from the site on Wednesday July 25 and Sunday August 5 from 8.25pm to 12.30am.

It comes after the TV channel did a news report on places to stay during the Games, describing Low Hall as a "perfect" budget option.

The council secretly signed a deal with campsite organisers last year to rent the land and attracted fury from residents by not consulting them.

The authority says the profit it hopes to make from the deal will pay some of the estimated £1.5million bill for its 'Big 6' series of events to celebrate the Olympics.

It has also come under criticism for choosing Big Events Camping Ltd (BEC) for the contract, as its major shareholders are organisers of events renowned for raunchy entertainment, such as 'The Church' in north London which features stripper shows.

BEC has always insisted the campsite will be safe and family-friendly.
