A STRONG man competition to find new players for a voluntary rugby club didn't go as planned when only 15 men turned up to compete.

Organiser and head coach of Woodford Rugby Club, Max Malkin, said: "With the weather I think a lot of people didn't bother turning up and only three of the 15 men who competed weren't part of the club already.

"But the people who did come said they loved it and enjoyed themselves."

The winner received a trophy, a bottle of champagne and bragging rights for the year.

The competition was a recruitment drive on behalf of the club, in the High Road, Woodford Green, to entice new members to the sport.

Mr Malkin said: "We need new players constantly as with the nature of amatuer sport, players get injured all the time and take time off when they like.

"If you are a successful team, then it is a good way of getting players."

Mr Malkin hopes the success of the team in this year's season will bring new players flooding to the club.
