A COUNCILLOR has said a controversial mutli-millionaire should carry the Olympic torch through Redbridge because of the amount of tax he has paid.
Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of advertising company WPP, will take part in the torch relay on July 22.
But company shareholders recently rejected Sir Martin's reported £13 million pay packet. The revolt was said to be a reaction to a large pay increase the previous year.
Conservative councillor Paul Canal said he had earned the right to carry the torch due to the number of jobs he had created.
"He has paid more tax than the rest of Redbridge put together, so why can't he run with the torch?"
The Olympic torch relay will start at Redbridge Cycling Centre at 7.20am on July 22 before travelling to Fairlop Waters, Fullwell Cross, Barkingside High Street and Gants Hill.
It will then pass Valentines Mansion before moving on to Ilford Town Centre and Ilford Lane.
