THE transformation of a rundown 1970s housing estate is nearing completion.
A total of 43 new affordable homes are being built by housing association East Thames at Hammond Court, off Blackhorse Road, in Walthamstow.
The roof of the five-storey development is now being built and internal work is due to start at the end of the summer.
The development, which is due to be completed by April next year, will feature properties ranging from town houses to flats and a central communal garden.
East Thames promise spacious properties, deep balconies, affordable rents or shared ownership, and energy efficiency.
Councillors visited the site last week to check on progress.
Councillor Marie Pye, cabinet member for housing and development, said: "Hammond Court is in a part of the borough that has been earmarked for regeneration and this is a significant step in transforming the area.
"It’s just this sort of investment in affordable housing in the borough that is helping Waltham Forest improve the quality of life of its residents and make it an exciting and vibrant place to live."
