FIVE generations of the same family will come together at the weekend to mark a ‘miracle’ mum’s 100th birthday.


Edith Rogers, of Pyrles Lane, Loughton, celebrated her special day on Thursday (July 19) – and was thrilled to receive a congratulatory card from the Queen.


Mrs Rogers was born in Stepney on July 19, 1912, and married George at the age of nineteen. The couple had three daughters – Edith, Georgina and Sylvia.


After the Second World War - during which George worked for the Ministry of Transport - the family moved to Loughton, setting up home in Colson Road in 1949.

Edith worked as a cleaner at Lucton Boys School – now closed down – and at the post office in The Broadway.


Sadly, George passed away 50 years ago, at the age of only 51. Edith never remarried and, after retiring, devoted herself to caring for her disabled daughter.


The couple’s eldest daughter Edith Girling, 80, said: “They had a good life together. It’s a long time for mum to be on her own. She was quite a charming lady, but she didn’t think about getting married again.”


Edith has seven grandchildren and one great-great grandchild – and the whole family will be uniting in Loughton on Saturday (July 21) to enjoy a birthday meal.

“All the grandchildren are scattered all over the place, so it’ll be nice for everyone to be together,” added Mrs Girling.


“She’s been a great mum, to do what she’s had to do. She’s been a miracle really.”
