DAVID Beckham could be granted the freedom of Waltham Forest next month.

A proposal to make the football superstar an honorary freeman of the borough was put forward at the town hall by Tory group leader Matt Davis last night (July 19).

His motion was then backed by his own party as well as Labour and the Liberal Democrats and is likely to be finalised by the council over August, when the LA Galaxy player is expected to be in London to accept the honour.

Beckham was born in Leytonstone before moving to Chingford as a young boy.

Cllr Davis said: "It's the Olympic year and David Beckham was a major part of getting the Olympics here so it feels right.

"This way we can show that we appreciate him greatly. He really deserves this - he's a truly inspirational person and has done so much, it's what the award is meant to celebrate."

The multi-millionaire would not get any special rights if he was granted the honorary title.
