REDBRIDGE police have issued a warning to residents to be more vigilant as the summer months approach.
As the weather gets warmer more and more windows are left open for longer or forgotten about entirely, leaving opportunities for would-be burglars.
A police spokesman said: "We can only arrest burglars after they have committed a crime, but you have the power to protect your home and prevent yourself from becoming a victim of crime in the first place.
"Prevention is better than cure. Don't become a victim of burglary - protect your home."
The police have issued the following advice:
■ Make sure doors are locked with a key. Just pushing the handle up will not prevent someone from entering.
■ Make sure windows are closed at night time, even when you are in bed.
■ Invest in window locks for ground level windows
■ Keep side and rear garden gates locked at all times.
■ Install an alarm and security lights around your home to deter burglars.
■ Do not leave car keys or ID documents near doors, letterbox or windows.
■ Property mark valuables and register items with a serial number.
■ Tidy away any garden tools after use and always keep sheds and outbuildings locked.
