PENSIONERS living in sheltered accomodation have signed a petition calling for action to stop a road being used as a "rat-run".

Hilary Dennis Court is located on a sharp bend in Sylvan Road, Wanstead, and vulnerable residents fear for their safety as they claim drivers use the route to avoid traffic lights in Hermon Hill.

Greg Eglin, a Labour activist, presented the petition, which was signed by two-thirds of those living in Hilary Dennis Court, to councillors at a meeting yesterday (July 23).

He said: "The road is very busy in the mornings and in the evenings.

"If we have commuters coming from both sides the potential for collision is quite large.

"Most of the residents are partially sighted, it is a great concern for them when they go out."

Brenda Harris, of Hilary Dennis Court, said: "We do hope in our wildest dreams for a one way street, but possibly a mirror could be put up by the bend because the cars cannot see each other so they certainly can't see us.

"There wasn't one person who was against the idea of doing something about the traffic.

"It would be perfect if someone would listen to us."

Cllr Sue Nolan, cabinet member for highways, said at the meeting she would raise the matter with officers and add the issue to a list of issues to be dealt with.

She told the meeting that it was unlikely anything would happen until after the Olympics.
