MORE sixth formers who attend Redbridge state schools go on to university than anywhere else in the country, according to figures published by the Department for Education.

The data which was released this week showed that 72 per cent of those Redbridge students who sat their A Levels in 2008/9 went on to university  - meaning the Borough's schools topped the league table.

Ilford County High School came out as the top school/college in the country with 88 per cent of its students moving into higher education.

Pupils who sat their GCSEs at the Borough's state schools in the same year also did well with 91 per cent of them moving into 'sustained education or training'.

However, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education sounded a note of caution over the figures.

She said: “The statistics are published as Experimental Statistics and do not display the National Statistics logo.

“They are still being evaluated and remain subject to further testing to determine their reliability.”

But Cllr Alan Weinberg, Redbridge Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "This is fantastic news and an outstanding achievement by our young people.

“This Borough's schools have an excellent track record when it comes to exam results and our students outperform many of their counterparts year on year.

"It is a testament to the aspirations of our young people, their parents and our teachers that so many of them are able to secure higher education places and move into to further education and training."
