APPARENTLY there's some kind of sporting event going on in east London over the next few weeks - but fear not!

While many regular gig nights (such as E17 Jazz) are on a summer break, there's still plently of pubs and clubs that will be ringing with the sound of music - despite all the disruption caused by sweaty fit people.

Award-winning duo The Jones Boys play Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (July 26).

They are accordion and melodeon player Sam Sloan and mandola performer Gordon Jackson, and they dish out traditional music from across Europe.

Entrance is £3 and doors to the venue, in the Loughton Club on Station Road, are at 8pm.

The entertaining Pete Morton performs Chaucer's 14th Century classic The Miller's Tale via the medium of the songs of Bob Dylan at Ye Olde Rose and Crown this Saturday (July 28).

The show, at the pub in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, starts at 8pm and tickets are £10.

Slam headline the Artisan Music Venue in Hall Lane, Chingford, on Friday night (July 27).

Support comes from Airforce.

It costs £6 on the door, or £5 with a band flyer. The show gets going at around 8pm.

Roots acts The Beldons and Kirsty Bromley play Waltham Abbey Folk Club on Monday (July 30).

But there's a problem. Their usual venue at the Royal British Legion building in Brooker Road is closed that night, so the group is holding the concert at a house instead.

To find out the address, call Jan on 01992 613 987.

Rock 'n' roll psych-garage band The Fabulous Penetrators gig at the Birkbeck Tavern in Langthorne Road, Leytonstone, on Saturday (July 28).

It's at 8.30pm and, being a show organised by promoters What's Cookin', is free to get in – although donations welcome.

Twelve-string guitar acts Simon Onions and Talvin Singh perform at the same venue from 6pm on the Sunday (July 29).

It's also free.

She Crazy! headline the Square in Harlow on Thursday (July 26).

Also playing are Hello Bear, Two:10 and CityLights.

It costs £4, or free for members, and begins at 8pm.
